Part 1

LANGUAGE

At Eastwards Consortium, our focus is primarily on educating and developing the next generation of our society. This section showcases off our ‘Wellcomm Primary’ activity set, and below you will find a set of tabs which depict these tasks further. If you find children are struggling with a task or, on the other hand, passing with flying colours, indications and suggestions are proposed in each section to ensure you keep all children challenged and on-task as much as possible.
To view the various parts of each activity, simply click on the respective tab and watch it magically appear!

SUGGESTING CONSEQUENCES FOR ACTIONS OR BEHAVIOUR

MAIN ACTIVITY

  • Show the child the following picture:
  • Ask the child questions about the picture using the word ‘what’: ‘What would happen if the woman did not find what she was looking for?’ ‘What was the man looking for?’ ‘What would happen if there was no food in the supermarket?’

HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS ACTIVITY MORE CHALLENGING?

  • Ask the pupil to provide positive and negative consequences of the picture.

HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS ACTIVITY EASIER?

  • Offer choices for the situation in the picture: ‘If the woman was looking for bread and she could not find any, would she still shop there or look elsewhere?’

USING VERBAL LANGUAGE TO SOLVE A PROBLEM

MAIN ACTIVITY

  • Ask the child: ‘The man keeps sending paper aeroplanes to the woman but they keep falling before they get to her. What could the man do to get her attention?’
  • The child has to then give possible solutions to the story in the video.
  • Watch through the rest of the video and discuss if the child’s solution to the problem was suitable or not.

HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS ACTIVITY MORE CHALLENGING?

  • Provide the child with different problems throughout the day to solve. For example, ‘The bin is full.  Where should we put the rest of our rubbish?’

HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS ACTIVITY EASIER?

  • Work through different problems together.

SELECTING KEY INFORMATION FROM A COMPLEX SPOKEN PARAGRAPH

MAIN ACTIVITY

  • Show the child the following piece of text:
  • Tell the child that after you have read the text, you want the child to answer the following questions: ‘What power does Blue Ice Girl have?’ ‘Whose breath is as hot as the scorching sun?’ ‘Who can turn invisible?’
  • Recommend to the child that when listening to the text, they might want to write down notes or draw pictures to support them with answering the questions.
  • Read through the text with the child and then the child must answer the questions.
  • If the child is incorrect, read through the text again and support the child with finding the correct answers.

HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS ACTIVITY MORE CHALLENGING?

  • Read longer pieces of text to the child and ask questions regarding the text that you have read. For example, a chapter story book or an article from the newspaper.

HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS ACTIVITY EASIER?

  • When reading through the text in the activity, exaggerate the parts that are the answers to the child’s questions.
  • Tell the child to raise their hand when they hear the answer to the question.

JUSTIFYING THEIR DECISIONS AND OPINIONS

MAIN ACTIVITY

  • Tell the child that they will be having a debate with you regarding the films in this video.
  • Say to the child that you think ‘Beauty & The Beast’ is the better film that ‘The Lion King.’
  • The child has to provide reasons as to why they think ‘The Lion King’ is the better film.

HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS ACTIVITY MORE CHALLENGING?

  • Ask the child to summarise the main points from the debate.

HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS ACTIVITY EASIER?

  • Ask the child about what they would like to debate about.
  • Use ‘My turn, your turn’ to voice the opinions in the debate.
